  • Our Nursery Curriculum

In the Early Years, our curriculum is rooted in the belief that children learn best through a balance of child-led exploration, playful enquiry, and scaffolded adult-guided learning. Guided by the Development Matters framework, we view our youngest learners as capable, curious, and active constructors of their own knowledge. From the very start of their educational journey, we embed our core vision—‘Make Great Choices, Be Our Best’—in a way that is developmentally appropriate, nurturing, and joyful.

    Exploratory & Play-Based Learning

We recognise that play is a child’s natural and most powerful tool for learning. Our curriculum is designed around a rich, stimulating, and enabling environment—both indoors and outdoors—that invites open-ended exploration. Through high-quality play, children test ideas, take calculated risks, and solve problems creatively. In this exploratory space, children are given the autonomy to make great choices about where their learning takes them, choosing their own resources and following their natural curiosities.

The Prime and Specific Areas of Development

Our curriculum ensures a holistic approach, prioritising the Prime Areas (Communication and Language, Physical Development, and Personal, Social, and Emotional Development) as the crucial foundations for all future learning. As children progress, we weave in the Specific Areas (Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World, and Expressive Arts and Design) through captivating, flexible topics. This responsive approach allows us to follow the children’s current interests while ensuring a broad and balanced foundation on which to build their learning as they move onto the National Curriculum.

Progressive Building of Knowledge, Skills, and Independence

Following the pathways of Development Matters, learning is sequentially scaffolded to support each child’s unique developmental timeline. We focus heavily on cultivating the Characteristics of Effective Learning:

    • Playing and Exploring: Finding out, exploring, and having a ‘can-do’ attitude.
    • Active Learning: Developing resilience, concentration, and the pride of trying their hardest.
    • Creating and Thinking Critically: Having their own ideas, making links, and choosing ways to do things.

By nurturing these characteristics, we teach children how to self-regulate, collaborate, and take responsibility for their actions.

Through warm, positive relationships and a deeply engaging, play-based curriculum, we ensure our children feel safe to explore, create and imagine. When our children transition from the EYFS to KS, they leave as confident and independent communicators who possess the ability to make great choices about their learning, behavior and social and moral development; as well as the intrinsic motivation to want to be their best.
