Meeting your child's needs

Meeting your child's needs

Upon enrolment, we discuss your child's routine and home experiences. This will enable us to ensure that we have a full understanding of their sleep, food/drink and any health needs and allow us to meet all of your child's needs.

All staff have had allergy training and will work with you to ensure your individual child's needs are met.

All staff have had sleep training and will work with you to ensure your individual child's needs are met.

We know that some of our youngest children will still be getting used to solid foods. We are proud to be a breastfeeding-friendly nursery and will fully support your child's weaning process. Just let us know your requirements.

Allergies

Our school and nursery are committed to managing all children's allergies.

We will identify children with allergies, minimise the risk of exposure to allergens and manage the risk of your child's allergy through an individual healthcare plan. Your enrolment paperwork will ask you to state any allergies and follow-up conversations will be had prior to your child starting.

All staff have been trained in allergy awareness and emergency response. Adrenaline devises are stored within the school and nursery buildings.

St. James’ CE First School and Nursery, supports the approach advocated by Anaphylaxis UK towards nut bans/nut free schools. St. James' is nut free, and we politely request that no items containing nuts are brought into school.

Sleep

Our nurseries are committed to providing a safe, secure and suitable environment for all children during periods of rest and sleep. We recognise that sleep is essential for children's wellbeing, development and learning, and we will ensure that all sleep arrangements minimise risks and promote children's safety at all times.

Staff will chat with you about your child's sleep routine, comforters and sleep aids prior to their start.

Meals

Be it breakfast, lunch or tea, the children sit down to a meal with their friends where we can focus on table manners, conversation skills and encouraging independence.

Breakfast Session

Breakfast (Optional at £1.00 charge for any child attending the 7.45-8.30am session)

Held in the main school, children sit down to a variety of breakfast items, including toast, cereals, fruit and yoghurt. Children love the interactive experience and come out of breakfast club smiling, ready for the day ahead.

Snacks

A wide range of fruit and vegetable snacks are served.

We aim to broaden our children's experiences by offering them seasonal choices and local produce. Children have free access to their water bottles throughout the session and are encouraged to be independent in accessing the milk and water jugs made available.

Lunch

We are proud at St. James' to provide tasty, nutritionally balanced meals using our provider, Forerunner. Lunchtime is an important social occasion, where children can refuel and relax with their friends.

Please go to our meals link under the Parents tab on the main home page.

If you would rather, some children bring a lunch box with them, we would just ask that you follow the following EYFS guidance from the Food Standards Agency.

Please be assured that lunchtime remains an important social occasion.

Late Afternoon Session

Light Tea (Optional at £1.00 charge for any child attending 3.00-5.00pm session)

Light Tea is served as part of the late afternoon session in our nursery building and children enjoy a variety of healthy choices, including sandwiches, fruit yogurt to name but a few. This is a relaxed and enjoyable part of the session where children are encouraged to reflect on their day whilst they eat their teatime snacks.

Collection from the late afternoon session is from the Nursery building at 4.00pm and from the Reception Gate (just inside the pedestrian gate 1) at 5.00pm.
